Piano Lessons Make You Smarter!

There are numerous benefits to taking piano lessons, but recent studies have shown yet another benefit to learning the piano.
In a study conducted by E. Glenn Schellenberg at the University of Toronto in Mississauga, Schellenberg presents data that supports how the many aspects of playing the piano can contribute to boosting a person’s IQ. The study tested children’s IQs after nine weeks of piano lessons versus children who didn’t take any piano lessons. The results showed that the young students who took piano lessons increased their IQ by almost three points compared to those who didn’t take piano lessons.
Schellenberg’s study described how the numerous characteristics of playing the piano aid in exercising the brain.
This includes:
Memorization –
a big part of being successful in school revolves around memorization skills, something that is fully utilized with piano lessons. When learning the piano, students must memorize the keys on a piano, multiple songs, and much more.
Interpretation –
Upon taking piano lessons, students will learn how to translate multiple musical symbols into sounds. According to the study made by E. Glenn Schellenberg, this can correlate to any other field of study involving translation such as foreign languages and mathematics.
Although the study primarily shows that the greatest advancements to people that take piano lessons occur in children, Schellenberg notes that there is nothing unbeneficial to taking lessons as adults.
